Celebrating Ostara - The Spring Equinox

Updated: Mar 4, 2020

With the arrival of March the promise of spring is soon on its way. If you live in the north hemisphere it marks the time of the spring equinox and the first official day of spring and its warm sunny days that follow. This day marks the night both light and dark become equals once again and the light half of the year begins its triumph over the darkness.

Celebrations and Rituals

Depending on your traditions you may celebrate Ostara differently however it is typically celebrated similarly to Easter, observing the time of spring and the fertility of the universe. By observing mother earth and becoming one with the season you will know exactly how to greet the season.

Ostara Tips

Spring is almost upon us! Remember that even if you’re busy you can still do something simple to welcome in the spring season.

  • Talk to your plant babies, make sun water for them or leave them with one of your favorite crystals.

  • Feel the sunshine and breathe in the fresh spring air even if it is just for a second and allow it to recharge you.

  • Collect spring flowers.

  • Leave out some food for the squirrels and birds in your area.

  • Take a floral ritual bath or try our pre-made Self-Love Ritual Bath Salt Soak.

Spring Witchcraft

  • Put your bare feet on the soil and imagine your roots shooting down and grounding you into the earth.

  • Open your windows and let the fresh spring breeze flow through your space.

  • Start your own herb or vegetable garden.

  • Work with the fae or other nature spirits.

  • Harvest flowers for decorating with or use for future spells.

  • Break out those spring fragrances and candles. Be sure to try out all natural Ostara Honeysuckle and Jasmine Wax Melts.

  • Plant wildflowers around your area to help save the bees.

  • Make wishes on dandelions or collect some to make tea.

  • Any spells involving growth, new ideas, and refreshing your spirit.

Ostara Altar Ideas

  • Use fake eggs or crystal eggs to decorate

  • If you have a rabbit or other things that remind you of fertility and spring put them out.

  • Put some plants out on your altar.

  • If you have any seeds you plan on planting now is a good time to put them out.

  • Decorate with colors like purple, green, yellow, and white or any color you associate with spring.

  • Leave out an offering of milk and honey for the fae.

  • Light one white and one black candle to represent the equal hours of light and dark.

Natural Dyed Ostara / Easter Eggs

Enjoy dying eggs using a natural process and learn about using herbs as dyes all in one go.

What you’ll need:

  • Heat Safe Cups or Bowls

  • Pot to Boil in

  • Water

  • Vinegar

  • Eggs

  • Crayons or Wax (optional)

  • Coloring Herbs

Coloring Herbs:

  • Yellow- carrots, white grape juice, turmeric (½ tsp)

  • Pink- madder root

  • Blue- blueberries, red cabbage, black raspberries

  • Blue-Violet- blackberries, beet juice, mulberries

  • Black- raspberries

  • Orange- onion skins, madder root, cayenne

  • Red- red onion skins, madder root, cayenne, cranberries

  • Red-Violet- purple grape juice, red raspberries

  • Green- carrot tops, bracken, spinach, colts-foot

How to make natural dyed eggs:

  1. Boil a handful of colorant ingredients until the water is well colorer, simmer for 30 minutes and then strain.

  2. Place water into a heat resistant cup or bowl and stir in 1 tsp of vinegar (for larger amounts use 1 tbsp vinegar/1 quart) and add a pinch of salt.

  3. Soak your eggs and note that the longer you leave the eggs in the darker they will become.

  4. You can use a crayon or wax from a candle to draw on your eggs and where the wax is the dye will not be able to stick leaving you with a cool design.

  5. You can also lightly and carefully crack the egg shell and the dye will seep in wherever the egg is cracked which looks really pretty when you finally peel them.
