What is Moon Water and How do I Use it?

Updated: Mar 4, 2020

What is moon water?

Put simply moon water is water that has been left to charge under the full moon. Witchepedia describes it as, "Moon water is water that has been charged with the energies of the moon. It is a popular way to charge water to be used during a ceremony or spell working or to brew magical potions and may be used for anything you are directed to use water for."

You can make moon water at any phase during the moon cycle and capture its energy however it is most common to make moon water during full moons or energetically charged super-moons.

How do I make moon water?

The way I’m going to share with you is the way that we personally make it, as charging moon water is a monthly ritual in our house, and the benefits and uses I will list are all great places to start thinking. Personally my favorite ways to incorporate moon water into our life is by having a small drink of it first thing in the morning to help align our energies for the day. We also love to make extra for use in our herbal extracts that are available for sale in our shop!

Things you’ll need:

  • Glass jar, container, bowl , or a jug (We personally generally pick up glass bottles from the dollar store or thrift stores when we find them)

  • Distilled, spring, or purified water

Instructions:

1) Fill up your choice of container (remember though that glass works best for this process as it is a clean energy conductor,) with your distilled, spring, or otherwise purified water. We like to use a container with a lid on it that way no bugs or dirt can get inside.

2) Place the somewhere the moonlight can hit it well, if its warm outside feel free to find a nice spot for it outside however if temperatures drop below freezing in your area at night its best to leave in a windowsill that will get good moonlight at least sometime in the night.

3) Bless your water and say your intentions over it, you can choose to use an incantation or prayer if you would like, I will drop the one we use down below. You can also take this time to add any crystal (make sure they are safe for water first) or draw sigils, runes, or reiki symbols on your bottle to charge with it if you would like.

4) The following morning your moon water will be done so go ahead and collect it and use it in any way you feel. Below I have listed 10 ways to use it if you are unsure of where to start.

Notes: If you are making full moon water, and you can’t put it out on the date of the full moon or if you simply just forgot, it’s totally okay! The full moon phase energy can be felt for almost a week; three days before the full moon, the day of, and three days after, so just put it out when you remember or are free to. Also, some people say that moon water is not meant to be touched by sunlight, meaning that if you leave it out too long and the sun rises and hits it you can no longer use it. I personally say go with what your instincts tell you, if you feel like it doesn’t affect your moon water then use it. The main point of all of this is to simply do what feels right to you!
